About Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPP)
The Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP) breed was developed by Gary and Shelly Farris of Farris Family Farm in the 1990s. Their goal was to create a unique breed of pig that would thrive on pasture while producing flavorful, high-quality pork. After carefully selecting and breeding a mix of Kune Kune, Berkshire, and Duroc pigs, the Farris family succeeded in developing a breed that has since become renowned for its exceptional meat quality, docile temperament, and adaptability to pasture-based farming systems.
Breed Origins and Characteristics
Kune Kune: These small, hardy pigs from New Zealand were chosen for their ability to thrive on pasture and their friendly, calm nature. The Kune Kune influence helps the Idaho Pasture Pig excel in grazing and rooting, making it a perfect fit for pasture-based farming systems.
Berkshire: Known for their excellent marbling and rich flavor, Berkshire pigs add exceptional meat quality to the Idaho Pasture Pig's genetics. The marbling from Berkshire genetics contributes to the tenderness and depth of flavor in the meat.
Duroc: The Duroc breed is recognized for its hardiness and rapid growth. It brings size and robustness to the Idaho Pasture Pig, further enhancing the breed’s ability to thrive in various farming environments.
Why Idaho Pasture Pigs Are Special
Superior Flavor & Marbling: Thanks to their slower growth rate and unique crossbreeding, Idaho Pasture Pigs produce pork that is tender, juicy, and full of rich flavor. The meat’s fine marbling ensures each bite is moist and flavorful, making IPP pork a standout in taste.
Pasture-Raised and Sustainable: The Idaho Pasture Pig excels in pasture-based systems. Unlike conventional pigs, which often require more intensive farming practices, IPPs can roam freely, forage, and root, leading to healthier pigs and more flavorful meat. Their natural diet and slower growth contribute to the superior taste and texture of the pork.
Docile and Easy to Handle: One of the standout features of the Idaho Pasture Pig is its gentle temperament. Thanks to the Kune Kune influence, these pigs are calm, friendly, and easy to handle, making them ideal for small-scale farms that prioritize animal welfare.
Why Choose Idaho Pasture Pigs for Your Pork
Idaho Pasture Pigs offer a rare combination of high-quality meat and humane, sustainable farming practices. Raised on pasture, they have the freedom to roam, forage, and live stress-free, which results in superior pork with an exceptional flavor. Whether you’re cooking chops, bacon, or roasts, the rich, tender pork from Idaho Pasture Pigs will elevate any meal.
Why Idaho Pasture Pigs?
Idaho Pasture Pigs are a rare and distinctive breed that thrives in pasture-based systems. Unlike conventional pigs, IPPs are known for their slower growth rate, which leads to meat that’s naturally more tender, flavorful, and well-marbled. Raised in a stress-free environment on open fields, our pigs have the space to graze, root, and enjoy a natural diet that enhances the richness of their meat. The result is pork that’s juicier, more flavorful, and simply unlike anything you’ll find at the grocery store.
Unmatched Flavor and Quality
The unique flavor of Idaho Pasture Pigs is due to their balanced diet and slow, natural growth. Their marbled meat ensures a juicy, tender cut with every bite. From sizzling pork chops to savory bacon, the quality of our pork is unparalleled. Whether you’re preparing a family dinner or a special occasion, our pork will add a rich, savory depth that’s sure to impress.
